California Women for Agriculture to honor Robert Bianco
The Coachella Valley Chapter of California Women for Agriculture will honor Robert Bianco, a partner in Coachella, CA-based Anthony Vineyards, as "Agriculturist of the Year" for his support of the fresh produce industry and California Women for Agriculture.
Mr. Bianco will receive the award at the organization's annual awards dinner June 23 at La Quinta Country Club in La Quinta, CA.
Suzanne Powell, senior vice president of marketing and business development for Coachella-based Peter Rabbit Farms and president of the Coachella Valley Chapter of California Women for Agriculture, said that Mr. Bianco has been a longtime supporter of their chapter.
Hes extremely generous with scholarships, Ms. Powell said, adding that for the past six years, the city of Coachella had funded a full-day ag summit event attended mostly by consumers. The event was held in the Anthony Vineyards grape cooler, free of charge. The Coachella Valley Chapter of California Women for Agriculture also will award scholarships as it does each June to graduating high school seniors pursuing a college education in an agricultural-related field.
The chapter has five students in its program plus two graduating this June.
Provided students meet grade-point minimums, the chapter will award the scholarship each of their four years. This years recipient is Christine Allard, who is graduating from Indio High School this month and is headed to California Polytechnic University-San Luis Obispo in the fall. Ms. Allard was an active member in the schools 4-H program and is graduating with honors.
One of the chapters graduating students is receiving her degree in veterinary medicine from Purdue University this month; the chapter supported her all eight years of her education.
New this year, the chapter partnered with the California Date Administrative Committee.
Two scholarships will be awarded to students entering culinary arts programs.
Miriam Mastro is graduating from La Quinta High School and will attend the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY, in the fall. Gissell Urieta also is graduating from La Quinta High School and will attend Johnson & Wales University in Denver this fall. Their scholarships also will be perpetual as long as a minimum grade point average is met.
