Auction’s Carol DeFoor ‘looking forward to a strong fall’
VINELAND, NJ — The Vineland Produce Auction’s Carol DeFoor was looking forward to a good fall season, as the quality of fresh produce items has been consistently high throughout the summer even as supply and demand was affecting pricing during the month of August.
New Jersey’s 2014 spring produce season got off to a late start due to the unusually long and cold winter, but “the beginning part of the season was really good,” DeFoor told The Produce News Aug. 19 at her office here. “We made up for the late start.”
However, “August is slowing down,” which is not unusual, and “prices are lower than the farmers would like,” she said. As is often the case, it’s just a matter of supply and demand. “More areas of the country came in at the same time, so there’s lots of product around.”
Some weather events last year — primarily very heavy rains in some areas — hurt quality and production of some items, she noted, but “thankfully this year there were no significant weather problems.” As a result, quality of fresh produce items across the board from New Jersey has been “excellent” all season long, she stated.
With that in mind, DeFoor said that she was “looking forward to a strong fall.” Already by the third week in August, “We’re starting to see more greens coming through the auction,” she said. Locally grown escarole and endive, for example, “have already started.”
Looking ahead, “All the lettuces should be in by the end of September, with sweet potatoes and later fall crops after that,” she said.
