CMI Orchards flies high with expanded portfolio
In a strategic alliance that fueled excitement throughout the industry, CMI Orchards joined forces with Starr Ranch/Oneonta Trading Co., incorporating entities like Custom Apple, Diamond Fruit and Apple King. Joel Hewitt, vice president of sales for CMI Orchards, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, emphasizing the combined skills and experience of two exceptional teams that have ushered in a new era of innovation.
“Adding more than 8 million cartons to CMI’s manifest through this partnership was a natural step forward,” said Hewitt. CMI’s rich history in fruit cultivation in the Pacific Northwest, coupled with the legacy of growers and an unwavering commitment to meeting retail demands, makes this collaboration a testament to the industry’s evolution.
CMI’s current focus revolves around innovation, quality and a commitment to leading the industry with the most extensive selection of core, organic, and specialty apples, pears and cherries under one roof.
Hewitt highlighted the significance of understanding consumer preferences and trends, particularly when it comes to apple varieties. He noted that, “There are tons of excellent apple varieties out there right now.” Hewitt then elaborated on some standout varieties in the current retail landscape.
Ambrosia Gold, a perennial favorite, has held a top position in overall apple sales for over five years. Its versatility for snacking, baking or cooking make it a sought-after choice for consumers. Envy apples, recognized as the No. 1 best-selling branded apple, boasts sweetness, firmness, and an attractive red color, appealing to both taste and aesthetics. Kanzi and JUICI are celebrated for their flavor profiles and culinary versatility, with Kanzi rapidly gaining popularity in the United States. EverCrisp stands out for its sweetness and loud, crispy crunch, making it an appealing option for snacking. The Cosmic Crisp continues its impressive sales trajectory, securing a top 3 spot in overall branded apple sales.
The emphasis on consumer demand for fresh, high-quality flavors propels CMI Orchards’ commitment to supplying a diverse range of top-selling branded apples. Hewitt noted the company’s participation in the International Pome Fruit Alliance (IPA), dedicated to exploring and seeking out new and exciting apple and pear varieties. Retail trends are closely tracked through various channels, ensuring alignment with consumer preferences.
Hewitt teased some exciting initiatives on the sustainable and regenerative farming front, with a commitment to achieving a carbon-negative apple, pear and cherry operation. The adoption of regenerative practices, including water management, cover crops, reduced tilling and livestock integration, underscores its dedication to environmental responsibility.
Despite industry challenges beyond its control, such as inclement weather, logistics hiccups and labor shortages, CMI Orchards remains resilient. The H2A program provides qualified farm workers and to address logistics challenges, CMI Orchards established EagleForce, LLC, its own trucking company, offering load consolidation and a more reliable service.
Hewitt acknowledged the importance of information in overcoming challenges, stating, “staying informed ensures we’re able to bring our customers all the fruit they could need or want.” This sentiment aligns with the company’s commitment to transparency, crucial in an era where young customers seek honesty in their produce purchases.
As the industry landscape evolves, CMI Orchards recognizes the shift in shopper demographics, increasingly driven by young and conscientious consumers. Retailer education programs, such as CMI’s Flavogram, play a vital role in exposing consumers to high-flavor branded varieties. Hewitt emphasized the company’s dedication to innovation, intelligence and integrity, ensuring they stay at the forefront of the market by continually seeking the next big thing.
“We’re constantly looking toward the future,” he said, pointing to research and development dedicated to ensuring retailers can bring the best tasting fruitto their customers. “Discovering the most exciting new apple varieties and giving retailers everything they could possibly need all in one place are what keep us at the forefront of the market.”
