Catania Worldwide adapting to impact of climate change

Catania Worldwide has had an exciting 2024, seeing an expansion of markets, selling into new territories and exhibiting continued growth of servicing retailers.

“Business for 2024 continues to expand with some new products and varieties,” said Mario Masellis, vice president of sales and marketing for Catania Worldwide Cos.

Catania Worldwide has implemented several strategies to adapt to the impact of climate change on crop production and quality. This starts with constant upgrades to current packaging.

“Our aim is to find 100 percent recyclable packaging with the least amount of change to shelflife of the product,” Masellis said. “To mitigate risks associated with climate change, Catania Worldwide sources its produce from various regions. This diversification helps us manage supply chain disruptions caused by extreme weather events or other climate-related challenges in any single area.”

This has become especially important due to the issues caused by extreme heat, wildfires, lack of water and/or extreme rain.

“All these extreme weather conditions have forced us to become creative in ensuring there are less and less supply chain disruptions,” Masellis said.

In light of recent global supply chain disruptions, inventory management has been key to maintaining the utmost quality and taste profile. After all, the least amount of storage ensures the freshest product.

“Our quality control teams conduct rigorous inspections and testing throughout the supply chain for anything we grow,” Masellis said. “From pre-harvest conditions to final product testing, we ensure that our produce meets the highest safety and quality standards.”

In addition, for anything the company imports, it continues to work closely with suppliers and logistics partners to ensure that they adhere to rigorous quality standards.

“Regular audits and collaborative problem-solving help to address issues before they impact the final product,” Masellis said.

Another key to success comes from trusted relationships that it has maintained.

“Many years of relationships with our growers have allowed us to understand the challenges the grower faces, as well as understand our market and the quality and taste we require for our customers,” Masellis said. “Field and orchard visits periodically all ensure consistent deliveries.”

Catania Worldwide stays ahead of changing regulations related to climate change and food safety to ensure compliance and maintain high standards for its produce. This is aided by membership in industry associations such as CPMA, OPMA and IFPA.

“Our food-safety team stays on top of government regulation and GFSI standards,” Masellis said. “Constantly researching, training and participating in informative webinars helps us implement rules and regulations throughout the company.”
