A lifelong apple grower with deep family roots in the Newcastle area has been chosen as the winner of this year’s UPL Golden Apple Award. The award was presented to David Gibson on Feb. 18 at the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association banquet in Niagara Falls.

Equitable Food Initiative, a workforce development and certification organization that partners with growers, farmworkers and retailers, has been awarded a $1.2 million grant from the Walmart Foundation. The funding marks the fourth grant EFI has received from the Walmart Foundation, part of its efforts to promote responsible labor practices across the produce supply chain.

The journey began in the early 1930s when Moses "Mose" Coleman discovered the uniquely sweet onions, now famously known as Vidalia Sweet Onions, growing in Toombs County. Vidalia Sweet Onions are grown during the short days of winter and harvested in spring. Each onion pulls nutrients from its top and bottom, forming its signature sweet rings. In ideal conditions, they can grow 1/8" in diameter every 24 hours.
