Stemilt has hired Nick Popper as its new vice president and general counsel. Popper comes to Stemilt following 10 plus years as Chief Counsel – Americas for Spectris plc. He brings 30 years of experience as an in-house attorney with vast knowledge in technology, software, IP licensing, precision measurement and industrial controls. This is a new role at Stemilt, where Popper will be responsible for creating process and systems that support the legal needs at Stemilt.

South Mill Champs announced the grand opening of its new state-of-the-art farm in Oxford, PA. The new facility will be one of North America's largest single-site mushroom farms and one of the largest phase three composting operations. Endless rain on the West Coast set back crops and harvests as excessive water hit fields. A considerable amount of California strawberry volume became very light. Mexico and Florida experienced cooler weather, lowering production. The Arizona desert crop escaped freezing and just had light rain.

The Fresh Produce & Floral Council held its first luncheon of the new year Jan. 18 at the Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton, CA. This luncheon featured Master of Ceremonies Daniel Bell of Grocery Outlet and 2023 FPFC Chairman Michael Schutt of Raley’s. Lori Taylor of The Produce Moms was the guest speaker and was joined by panelists Alex Jackson of Frieda’s, Marissa Ritter of Naturipe Farms, Myisha Nathaniel of Raley’s and Daniel Bell of Grocery Outlet.

Robert Sanderson, co-founder and former president of Jonathan Sprouts Inc., died Jan. 9 due to complications with pneumonia. Mr. Sanderson, along with his wife, Barbara, started Jonathan Sprouts in 1976, and the two have been credited as pioneers of the U.S. commercial sprouting industry.  Mr. Sanderson was born June 23, 1943 in Boston and attended Phillips Academy-Andover, and University of California-Berkely where he was a Buckminster Fuller enthusiast, active in the free speech movement and played in several jazz bands.
