With Mexico’s avocado volume declining as it nears the end of its 2020/21 season, the avocado market has strengthened as much as $10 per carton since July 1 with the most favored conventional fruit again selling for $40 per carton or more. “The market is good; it has finally turned around,” said Rob Wedin, executive vice president of sales for Calavo Growers Inc., based in Santa Paula, CA.

C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc., an industry leader in supply chain solutions and wholesale grocery supply in the United States, has entered into a definitive agreement with Piggly Wiggly Midwest with the intent to purchase the Wisconsin-based wholesaler. Piggly Wiggly Midwest operates corporate stores and services independent franchisees under a chain-style program. Since 1911, Sheboygan, WI, has been the home to Piggly Wiggly Midwest’s headquarters where it has its corporate offices and two of its distribution centers. A third distribution center is located in Milwaukee.

As things look and feel like they are returning back to normal, there are still many areas that have yet to rebound from the effects of the pandemic. One of those areas is product availability on the floral hardgoods side. We went from a very stable and predictable flow of product in 2019 to an environment now that is totally unpredictable in terms of both when product will be received and what the cost of that product will be once it arrives.

The Texas Citrus Pest and Disease Management Corporation (TCPDMC) and Texas A&M University-Kingsville Citrus Center (TAMUK) was awarded $4,061,941 in funding from the Huanglongbing Multi-Agency Coordination Group (HLB MAC). This CRaFT project is designed to enhance the sustainability of citrus production via multi-pronged grove management strategies in Texas.
