Charles (Chuck) Zambito, long-time owner of Zambito Produce Sales in West Deptford, NJ, died at the age of 85.

His company was a mainstay in the Philadelphia produce scene for nearly 50 years, handling potatoes, California Navel oranges, onions and mixed vegetables, and Mr. Zambito was the driving force behind its success.

Early in his career, while working in the Philadelphia area, Mr. Zambito met the love of his life, Bobbie. They settled in south Jersey where they raised their three children (Frank, Nicole and Christine). A big family man, Mr. Zambito proudly spoke of his kids and four grandchildren to anyone who would listen.

“What made him so special in this industry is that he did this all himself,” said Frank Zambito. “He had a partner at first, but built the business and was dedicated to doing his own thing. He had such a passion for it. He grew up on a farm and just loved the industry and wanted to stay connected to it.”

Born in Batavia, NY, Mr. Zambito graduated from Elba Central School and went on to serve his country in the Army before earning a business degree in agriculture at Cornell University.

Known for his charitable nature, Mr. Zambito was also heavily involved in Farmers Against Hunger, a nonprofit connecting farmers throughout New Jersey to contribute their extra produce to those in need. He also served on the New Jersey Agriculture Society and dedicated time to his alma mater.

A huge sports fan, Mr. Zambito could often be found cheering on his Philadelphia Phillies, Eagles, Flyers and Sixers.

Mr. Zambito continued to work until this past summer when his health took a turn and he was hospitalized. Even so, Frank noted his dad would still want to get on the computer and do some work, his dedication speaking volumes.

Over his 50 years in the business, Mr. Zambito made many great friends along the way and his presence will be greatly missed throughout the produce community.
