Christopher Ranch continues to invest in organic garlic program

As a third-generation, family-owned business, Christopher Ranch is one of the largest suppliers of domestically-grown garlic in the U.S. Last year, it saw numbers like never before.

“Due to the global pandemic, we saw an unprecedented surge in demand for all organic garlic line items,” said Ken Christopher, executive vice president of the Gilroy, CA-based company. “Peeled, fresh, and even jarred organic California garlic saw performance far beyond historical averages.”

Christopher Ranch offers an entire suite of organic products, ranging from organic garlic, shallots, ginger, and a full range of jarred items. In 2021, the company continues to see sustained demand for all of its organic products.

“As consumer demand is increasingly leaning towards organics, we aim to satisfy as much of that demand as possible,” Christopher said. “Christopher Ranch aspires to be the one-stop shop for organic specialty items for our customers.”

Over the past 10 years, as demand for organic garlic has continued to increase, Christopher Ranch has likewise worked with growers to expand its acreage.

“For the first time in a long time, we expect to offer a 100-percent California-grown organic garlic program for those customers that request it in 2021,” Christopher said. “Here in California, where nearly all specialty crops are produced, our biggest obstacle has been the California drought crisis. The drought has led to a decreasing pool of available land with which to best grow our crop. That being said, our long-term relationships within the industry have helped us to secure the ground and water we need to satisfy our customers.”

The company’s investment in expanding its organic program year after year allows it to capture new and exciting opportunities with an ever-expanding group of retailers that want to get into organics.

“Our scale allows us to entertain conversations with foodservice, retail, and industrial customers in ways that our competition simply cannot,” Christopher said.

At Christopher Ranch, leadership continues to work hand in hand with local public health officials to best coordinate delivery of both testing and vaccines for COVID-19. In fact, this year, it was able to offer onsite vaccinations that resulted in the family farm hitting a 93 percent vaccination rate.

“Our focus at this time, due to the extraordinary nature of the pandemic, is to focus on order fulfillment for our customer base,” Christopher said. “That being said, there have been many conversations about potential new products, but those are currently on standby as we focus on our existing product lines.”

As the only true family-owned commercial garlic farm in the United States, the company’s commitment to the integrity of its organic garlic products is always at the core of its business operation.

“Our long-term goal is to offer an All-American organic garlic program to our customers and end-use consumers,” Christopher said. “It’s our belief that given the opportunity, consumers will always select American-grown produce.”

Therefore, its strategy for 2021 is to offer a California organic garlic program for all of its customers that request it.

“We continue to invest in expanding our program year after year, and we’re finally catching up to national demand for our products,” Christopher said. “At Christopher Ranch, we continue to tirelessly invest in both traditional and social media to get the message about the importance of supporting American farmers out to consumers nationwide. Far too often, the average person doesn’t know where their produce is coming from, and we’re working to change that.”
