Setton Pistachio has a sustainable mindset

For more than four decades, the Setton family has found success by delivering a hands-on approach to growing and processing pistachios in Central California, and its reputation in the nut industry is unmatched.

Today, Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella operates in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley in California’s Central Valley and is one of America’s largest pistachio growers and processors, exporting to more than 60 countries world-wide.

“Our dedicated team takes a hands-on approach, attending to each detail of growing, harvesting, processing, manufacturing, packaging and marketing California pistachios all over the world,” said Joseph Setton, VP of domestic sales for Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella. “Setton Pistachio is the nation’s second-largest pistachio grower and processor in the country, so pistachios are our world.”

With Thanksgiving and Christmas in the months ahead, business is expected to pick up as consumer demand for pistachios always sees a large increase this time of year. In anticipation of the holiday months, the company has something new to offer.

“Coming into the holiday season is a great time for retailers to add Setton’s new 5-ounce Premium Pistachio Kernel line to their assortment,” Setton said. “The raw kernels are naturally perfect for consumers’ holiday baking and cooking while the extreme heat of Scorpion Pepper Seasoned Kernels is a great stocking stuffer.”

With attractive designs on a stand-up resealable bag, the company believes it is easy for retailers to cross merchandise this line with a variety of items in the produce section.

For example, retailers can give consumers a variety of options with Setton’s shipper display which arrives preloaded with both varieties.

“These SKUs will perform well into the new year as well when healthy-yet-delicious snacks become a priority, and then into the spring where pistachios are a smart snack choice while watching sports,” Setton said.

He added that the company would love to collaborate with retailers through any of the social media channels.

“We have had great success with our influencers and ambassadors spreading the word of California pistachios through education and delicious recipes,” he said. “Our presence online now extends to TikTok where we are reaching new audiences, and we welcome any partnerships with retailers to create new content.”

One thing on the minds of Setton leadership is how to reduce its environmental impact while growing and processing pistachios.

“It’s a continuous challenge. As we continue to grow, our philosophy of expanding in a thoughtful and sustainable way drives all of our efforts,” Setton said. “Our highly experienced teams have been able to improve production methods throughout the years with a focus on regenerative agriculture, employing sustainable practices throughout our entire process.”

For instance, rain and processing water is collected in reservoirs and recycled back onto the orchards. Also, green bio-waste is converted into top-quality compost, enhancing the soil by increasing fertility and bioactivity while pistachio shells are donated to the community for paving dirt roads, reducing air pollution.

In addition, solar energy naturally powers operations at both the processing and satellite facilities.

“Our commitment to regenerative agriculture creates a sustainability loop that allows all discarded product from our process to be converted back into a valuable input, even recharging the soil within our orchards,” Setton said. “As a leader in the pistachio industry, we are able to produce retail bags under our Setton Farms brand, the nation’s top private label brands, as well as bulk pistachios.”
