Setton Foods is going nuts over pistachios
Comsumers are going nuts over pistachios and officials at Setton International Foods, the producers of Setton Farm Pistachios, want to make sure they remain in the right spot at the right time in this burgeoning category.
The Commack, NY-based company, the nation’s second largest pistachio grower and processor, offers consumers—and retailers—a broad array of product to satisfy their broadening tastes in the category. “We excel at creating innovative pistachio products of the highest quality. It is what has propelled our success in the market,” said Joseph Setton, the executive vice president of the company, which was formed in the 1980s by brothers Joshua and Morris Setton. “As more and more people reach for plant-based protein snacks that are real foods, Setton Farms’ pistachio differentiates itself with quality that can see and taste.”
For example, he notes that Setton’s classic pistachio line of inshell and kernels are dry-roasted at a low temperature to maintain that fresh-from-the-orchard taste. By offering both seasoned kernels and seasoned inshell pistachios, a unique dark chocolate pistachio line and a variety of pistachio-centric snack mixes, Setton says that consumers have a range of premium quality choices that continues to expand.
Company officials say that what also sets Setton’s seasoned pistachios apart from most other flavored nuts is that they do not use any oil in the process, noting that allows the taste of the pistachio to shine alongside their all-natural seasonings. “We use premium ingredients and nothing artificial to create a delightful snacking experience,” Setton said. “Our seasoned pistachios are always vegan, kosher, non-GMO project verified and certified-gluten-free. Setton Farm’s Seasoned Pistachio Kernels offer a no-shell pistachio experience with natural seasoning and flavors familiar to potato chip snackers.”
The company recently announced a partnership with Tajín, the top chili powder seasoning brand in the U.S. and launching Tajín Chili & Lime Seasoned Pistachio Kernels. This new variety is the latest addition to its award-winning seasoned kernel line, which includes buffalo wing, scorpion pepper, salt & pepper, garlic onion, jalapeño and raw, and is available in 5-ounce or 20-ounce resealable stand-up bags with the option of a pre-loaded branded display.
Setton notes that consumers are increasingly looking for healthy, convenient and tasty snacks and pistachios are nutrient-dense, shelf-stable, and come in a variety of flavors, making them the ideal snacking nut.
“Demand also rises as customers become aware of new research that has revealed pistachios are the new superfood,” he said. “For example, studies have shown that pistachios contain all nine essential amino acids necessary for supporting growth and maintaining health, making them the only nut that is a complete protein. They are also an antioxidant powerhouse that rivals many foods commonly known for antioxidant capacity like blueberries, pomegranates, cherries, beets and red wine. We encourage retailers to use in-store signage or staff to inform customers at the store level further.”
Setton is prepared to work with retailers to maximize sales by using displays to increase visibility. Its new versatile shipper ships preloaded and ready to sell. For retailers with limited floor space, this display conveniently hangs from quarter pallet bins and existing fixtures or displays like traditional shippers, Setton says.
“This display is an effortless way for retailers to add more pistachios anywhere in the store to showcase some of our most in-demand products,” he said. “Helping consumers think of pistachios not only as a snack, but also as an ingredient, can also help get additional rings at the register. We work with a diverse group of ambassadors to develop unique and delicious recipes using our innovative selection of pistachios. We can help retailers inspire consumers to add our California-grown pistachios’ color, crunch and delicious taste to every meal.”
He adds that promotional discounts are always a great way to appeal to consumers and to get additional pistachio sales. The company recommends that retailers advertise around traditionally heavy snacking times such as Super Bowl, March Madness, Baseball Opening Day and Memorial Day.
With pistachio sales booming and a second generation firmly in place at the company, the Setton family has taken a hands-on approach to growing and processing pistachios in Central California for more than 40 years. Moreover, Setton Pistachio is vertically integrated, focusing on every step of the process, from growing and harvesting to processing, manufacturing, packaging and marketing its product worldwide.
“As Setton Farms continues to grow with the industry, we support our retailers by generating consumer demand for pistachios,” Setton said.
“Collaborating with influencers and ambassadors helps entice consumers to try Setton Farms products through education and delicious recipes.
We also offer health and wellness information for in-store nutritionists. All these things help keep pistachios top of the mind as a superfood that is delicious and healthy.”
