Progressive Produce is a year-round grower, packer and shipper of fresh produce, and two of its biggest commodities are potatoes and onions.

Progressive has been providing potatoes and onions for more than 50 years with the same promise of performance and excellence which has created great and long-lasting partnerships.

“Over the years, our onion and potato segments have evolved significantly,” said Oscar Guzman, vice president of marketing and sales at the Los Angeles–based company. “We have expanded our product lines to include organic and specialty varieties, catering to changing consumer preferences.”

This summer, the company announced the next phase of its new potato sorting machine installation.

“This cutting-edge technology is set to revolutionize our operations, allowing for greater efficiency and precision in potato packing,” Guzman said. “The advanced sorting capabilities will enable us to deliver even higher quality produce to our customers by ensuring that each potato is meticulously graded and sorted based on size, shape and quality.”

So, this upgrade not only enhances Progressive Produce’s productivity, but also aligns with the company’s commitment to sustainability by reducing waste and optimizing resource use.

Success in the onion and potato category requires a commitment to quality, innovation and customer satisfaction according to Guzman.

“It involves staying ahead of market trends, continuously improving farming practices and maintaining strong relationships with retailers and consumers,” he said. “Additionally, having a robust supply chain and effective marketing strategies are crucial.”

For 2024, the company is expecting a healthy new crop for potatoes come August.

“To stay competitive, we employ a just-in-time model that ensures our products are always fresh and available when needed,” Guzman said. “We pride ourselves on offering a year-round supply with no gaps, making us a reliable one-stop shop for our customers. By maximizing freight efficiency and utilizing vertically integrated operations, we streamline our supply chain from farm to table.”

Additionally, Progressive Produce offers multiple FOB drop points, which allows the company to be flexible and responsive to customers’ logistical needs.

“These strategies enable us to maintain a consistent supply, adapt to market fluctuations and provide top-quality produce throughout the year,” Guzman said.

Progressive has built enduring relationships with a diverse range of customers over its 50-year history in the produce industry. From retail chains and independent grocers to foodservice establishments and distributors, its customers span various sectors of the market.

“The secret to our strong partnerships lies in our unwavering commitment to performance and excellence,” Guzman said. “By consistently delivering high-quality products, exceptional service and innovative solutions that meet the unique needs of each customer segment, we’ve earned their trust and loyalty over the years. Our focus on collaboration, communication and responsiveness ensures that we remain a valued partner to our customers, fostering mutually beneficial relationships built on integrity and reliability.”

Progressive Produce prioritizes transparent and accessible communication with its customers, ensuring that their feedback is heard and acted upon promptly.

“By maintaining open lines of communication, we make it easy for customers to share their suggestions,” Guzman said. “Our ability to respond and evolve quickly in this dynamic environment is a key strength. We regularly review feedback to identify areas for improvement and implement changes that enhance our products and services. This proactive approach allows us to stay ahead of industry trends and continuously meet the evolving needs of our customers.

Looking ahead, the biggest opportunity for expanding and growing business lies in the development and promotion of value-added products and new varieties.
