Agri-Packing sees altered packaging demand in COVID-19 era
“For us at Agri-Packing, this year so far has certainly evolved with many challenges,” indicated Jorge Ruiz, salesperson for Agri-Packing Supply Inc. Agri-Packing is a major supplier of a wide range of supply products for Mexican produce grower-packers.
Ruiz told The Produce News on Jan. 30 that obstacles have ranged “from hikes in the prices of raw materials used in the products we sell, to prolonged lead times from the places we source our products, to longer lines all over due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
“It’s been an interesting year. We definitely are amazed at how many of our customers moved from bulk pack to the ‘Grab & Go’ pack or specialty pack, where they can move more of their crop volume. We virtually ran out of stock several times and the proprietary labels increased severalfold.”
Now at Agri-Packing, “We are increasing our stock daily, as we see in this sector most of the growth in terms of market acceptability.”
Ruiz continued: “Although the pandemic is, with the lack of a better word, stable, thanks to the ongoing vaccination, we still have seen spikes in most of our town [Nogales]and among our colleagues.”
Ruiz indicated, “We still have of couple of months of this winter and have seen interesting volume moved, as well as new ideas on packaging.”
“We hope this trend will continue to fill the end user’s needs,” he added.
Ruiz noted that Mexican “plantings are in normal mode. We just hope that the consumer feels more confident than ever to start demanding more and more of what this industry is ready to supply.”
In Nogales, Agri-Packing owns its own dry warehouse for its supply business. It also owns and leases several large cold storage buildings in Nogales; and one in Edinberg, TX.
