Frank Donio employs strategy when determining planting schedule

Officials at Frank Donio Inc. are locked into a battle with Mother Nature. No matter how hard the game becomes, they intend to come out a winner.

“When it comes to fall produce, it’s not just about throwing seeds in the ground and hoping for the best,” said Annie Pape, a fourth-generation member of the Donio family and a big part of the company’s sales and marketing team. “We really have to keep an eye on everything, especially the weather. It’s kind of like playing chess with Mother Nature — you have to be very strategic with your planting windows to make sure that you’re not too late or too early. Just like any growing season or region, weather is the most unpredictable factor. Too much rain, a hurricane sweeping through, or a few hotter than normal days can really mess with things, so it keeps us on our toes.”

Bob Delash, part of the Donio sales team, added that this year has been a year for the books, with four excessive heat waves and a tremendous amount of rain and humidity.

“We are pretty much past all of that now, all of the fall crops have been seeded and transplanted, from cabbages, herbs, lettuces and greens,” he said. “As long as the weather cooperates, we should have good quality and volume for late summer and fall, or until Mother Nature says no more. Currently we are in, and will continue with, the fall/winter squashes until the end of October/mid-November, and the quality and sizing of the crops are very nice and moving very well.”

Pape noted that sweet potatoes are top of mind during the fall season. “We’re one of the largest, if not the largest, suppliers of Jersey Fresh sweet potatoes,” she said. “We’ll have a great mix of the traditional orange sweet potatoes along with the red and white varieties. We’re also continuing our program with bagged Red Murasaki Sweet Potatoes and Purple Sweet Potatoes, both in our Top Crop brand. These are awesome because they add some variety and give consumers something new to try. The colors, flavors, and textures are a fun twist on what people are used to, and it’s a great way to mix things up in the kitchen.”

Pape said that retailers must do their part to help build awareness and generate consumer excitement. “In recent years retailers have been doing a great job of putting the fall favorites front-and-center in the produce section,” Pape said. “There’s a lot of nostalgia and excitement around autumn in general, so consumers tend to be pretty excited about bringing back their go to fall recipes that feature the locally grown products they love.”

Pape added that some of the top fall produce the company is looking at this year includes wet vegetables like cabbage, kale, and spinach, and hard squash like butternut, acorn and spaghetti squash. “You can’t forget cranberries — they’re another iconic fall item all over the country,” she added. “What’s cool about our cranberries is that they’re grown by families who’ve been doing this for generations, some for over five generations. It’s not just about keeping the tradition alive — it’s about making sure the quality and sustainability are top-notch, which is why people love Jersey Fresh cranberries so much.”

She also noted that on top of the local fall season, Donio has been making moves with its import blueberry program. “We’ve invested further in our partnership with our Peruvian blueberries this year,” Pape said. “We’ll have Planasa varieties like Blue Medeira and Blue Manila in production this year. This means we’ll have a steady supply of large, firm blueberries with an awesome flavor profile throughout the fall and winter.

“We’re looking forward to the plants yielding a consistent supply of jumbo blueberries, which we know people love,” Pape continued. “It’s all about making sure we can keep delivering top-quality fruit even after the U.S. season wraps up, and we’re really proud of what we’ve put together. At the end of the day, it’s about working with nature, planning for the future and being ready to roll with whatever comes our way.”
