Riggio Distribution remains a trusted source of produce

riggiopic As one of the largest produce wholesalers servicing the Midwest, Detroit-based Riggio Distribution Co. has been a trusted source for produce since starting operations in 1984.

“As an essential business during the pandemic, we have made adjustments to our operations and continued our products and services to our customers,” said Dominic Riggio, president of the full-service fresh produce distributor and wholesaler located on the Detroit Produce Terminal.

A trusted anchor tenant on the terminal, Riggio Distribution’s clients come from both retail and food service normally, as the company provides a full line of fresh fruits and vegetables that are shipped and received seven days a week to both corporate and independent customers of all sizes.

However, with COVID-19, its model has changed in recent months.

“Since restaurants and other food service users have been shut down, that sector of our business has basically gone away,” Riggio said. “Our people are what makes our company, we have good systems in place that help us adapt to the ever-changing produce industry, but our people make things happen.”

That’s why Riggio Distribution has been able to stay strong during this challenging time. The company took the necessary steps to ensure its employees were safe and continue to keep safety top of mind with everything they do. That has led to decade after decade of success.

“There are no secrets, success still comes from hard work, attention to details, and solid fundamentals,” Riggio said.

For generations, Riggio Distribution has partnered with some of the most highly recognized, respected, and quality growers in the entire industry. Among those are Cal-Organic Farms, Peri & Sons Farms, Pero Family Farms and North Bay Produce.

By partnering with these great growers, Riggio Distribution is able to service customers at a radius of 400-500 miles from its location and also moves product into Ontario. The company goes as far west as Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin, as far south as Georgia, and as far east as eastern Pennsylvania.

“Our customer base consists of chain and independent retail, wholesale food service providers, broad line distributors and food manufacturers,” Riggio said.

Riggio Distribution employs a fleet of refrigerated trucks and offers warehouse to warehouse as well as direct store delivery to all accounts.

While 2020 has caused some things to be put on hold, the company has not stopped thinking about how to grow and continue to improve all aspects of operations.

“Our plan for growth is similar year after year,” Riggio said. “We look for sustainable commodities and quality customers to increase our business. Obviously existing programs and customers are the fastest and most efficient paths to growth. We want to maximize our customer orders through existing logistics. When we see an opportunity, on either the customer or supplier side, we position ourselves to capitalize.”
