Rocky Produce off to a solid start this summer
Rocky Produce, a Detroit-based distributor that delivers product across Michigan and throughout the Midwest, is excited to embark on another busy summer season full of fresh, locally grown produce.
“All is well,” said Dominic Russo, sales team member of Rocky Produce. “It’s nice to be in this time of the year. A lot of fruits are moving — a lot of berries, melons, and California tree fruit is off the ground. It’s nice to have all these things to offer this time of year.”
Rocky Produce also carries a full line of Michigan-grown vegetables, which Russo noted will start within the next few weeks. “In many cases the farmers go direct to our customers, which is something we fully support,” Russo said. “We’re also committed to buying from our Michigan growers to compliment what they do and provide that service to customers that don’t have direct access to some of the growers.”
Even though signs are showing that the economy is going to slow down, business on the Detroit Produce Terminal Market is going good, Russo said. “So far this spring has been very strong and robust,” he noted. “It seems there are plenty of people going out and spending money on food at retail and dining out doesn’t seem to be slowing down.”
As for challenges facing the company, Russo said it’s the same common problem experienced across most industries right now — labor. “The staff and crew on board at the company do what it takes and get the work done,” Russo said. “We take it one day at a time and stay focused. We’re proud of the team we have and we all work together, especially with the labor issues that have been present the last few years.”
Russo made sure to mention that the team at Rocky Produce intentionally gives credit to God for the many ways he’s blessed the company and all of it’s members. “We’re thankful for all that we have been given — favor with our growers, favor with our shippers,” Russo said. “No matter what happens one day to the next, we put our faith in him and we’re thankful for what we have.”
