As an anchor tenant on the Detroit Produce Terminal, Riggio Distribution Co. is a trusted, full-service, fresh produce distributor and wholesaler, which has been servicing the entire Midwest from its home base for decades.

“We are a full-line wholesaler, handling all fruits and vegetables from around the world, in both conventional and organic,” said Dominic Riggio, president of Riggio Distribution, who explained his customers are national retail chains, independent retailers, national wholesalers, independent wholesalers, food manufacturers and broadline distributors.

Now that the calendar has turned to June, those at the company are looking forward to the months ahead.

“The changing of the seasons is always exciting in the produce industry, and moving into the summertime, we always welcome the local product,” Riggio said.

The company continues to look for opportunities to improve things for its customer base and works hard to ensure all of its customers are well cared for.

“At Riggio, we are always working on growth from the sales side as well as the supply side, staying nimble so we can capitalize on surprise opportunities has always been our strategy as well,” Riggio said.

The Riggio family has been servicing Detroit and Southeast Michigan for decades and has many strong relationships in the area.

“Our family history in this area starts with our grandfather who immigrated to Detroit from Terrasini, Sicily,” Riggio said. “Like so many immigrants looking for work, he found opportunity in the food industry and became a produce peddler. Our father continued in the business and today we are a third generation produce family.”

Working in Detroit has been a key to the company’s success as Riggio believes it’s a top produce town in the nation.

“Many things make the Detroit produce industry thrive including the diverse population and vibrant restaurant and culinary scene,” Riggio said. “But most importantly is the relationship of the independent retailers and food service providers and the Terminal Market wholesalers working together.”

He credits a strong team with one of the reasons for the company’s long success.

“Our team has many decades of experience,” Riggio said. “The team is a blend of different generations of produce wholesalers, with each team member providing value to our daily goals.”
