Lettuce prices surge

By

Iceberg lettuce prices have hit a 10-year high — up nearly $20 per case, to more than $50 — and industry observers expect these high prices to continue through mid-December.

Gro Intelligence said the increase is attributed to a dwindling supply from the Salinas Valley. The Iceberg market is transitioning to Yuma, AZ, and, may be in flux as low temperatures in that area may lead to lesser early season yields.

Romaine lettuce prices are also up to more than $32, a 50 percent increase, nearly a 10 year high, also due lesser harvest volumes.
