Overwrapped trays important addition for Coast Produce
As a food-safety precaution within the coronavirus pandemic, Coast Produce Co., Inc. earlier this year began offering to its retail customers served by the firm’s Los Angeles facility overwrapped trays of product. Ryan Jacobsen, Coast’s sales manager in it’s modern Nogales facility, said the positive reception from customers has brought about additional growth and the Nogales division will soon be offering the tray-wrap program to customers loading directly in Nogales as well. New packing equipment in the Nogales facility is in place and ready for this season.
In other news, Zack Ortiz has recently joined Jacobsen’s sales staff in Nogales. Jacobsen said that 28-years-old Ortiz comes from Nogales and a family with a long produce history.
Among other responsibilities, Ortiz will be expanding Coast’s 10-pound chili business. Coast offers a variety of fresh Mexican hot chilies. He will also be increasing Coast’s Mexican produce distribution through South Texas.
Jacobsen said Coast has been servicing customers with South Texas distribution for several years and Ortiz’ experience will build up additional tonnage moving from South Texas.
Key fresh Mexican items that Coast typically ships through Texas are mixed vegetables, Roma and round tomatoes, as well as chilies.
Jacobsen noted that Coast’s Los Angeles and Nogales operations frequently ship to one another when it can offer customer savings on transportation and ease of loading multiple commodities at a single shipping point.
In Nogales, the company specializes in chilies, cucumbers, soft and hard squash, green and colored Bell peppers, TOVs, and melons. The volume of watermelons, honeydew and cantaloupe heightens in the spring.
Coast also handles Mexican and California table grapes in the spring and summertime.
