Market Minute: Time for apple and pear promoting
Ever hear the phrase “comparing apples to oranges?” Well, there is also a similar phrase “comparing apples to pears.” They both mean mixing up two confusing things that are not alike in a discussion or argument.
This is the fall season for apples to lead the way followed by pears. There is a traditional autumn aroma in the air of farmstand bins of freshly harvested apples and pears accompanied by apple cider, apple pies, caramel apples, pomegranates and pumpkins. All those items extend into the Thanksgiving holiday, especially cranberries and pumpkin pies.
The Washington state apple market is steady with moderate demand and outstanding quality. This season’s crop is slightly lighter with Gala and Honeycrisp production under last year. This could escalate costs.
The eastern apple demand is moderate on a steady market with an excellent supply, taste and quality.
California and Washington pears are showing a moderate demand and a steady market. This season’s crop is substantially down due to inclement weather and low temperatures earlier in the year. Check with your pear suppliers for more updated information on the availability of pears and the quality.
Other arriving items:
Cherries from Chile should start to arrive by air in early November but prices will be higher until the vessels arrive. Chestnuts from Italy are available in time for the fall and holiday season. A steady supply of California persimmons are also available. Cranberries are ready to be stocked on displays and are always a holiday favorite.
Now is the time to get your produce department into the season with all the items that customers expect to see and buy. Promote them now to boost those sales.
