Market Minute: It's berry-promoting time
It's time to generate those berry sales as summer approaches.
The weather has greatly improved with ideal growing temperatures that are rapidly bringing on berry growth. As usual, the quality of the California strawberries is outstanding and taste is superb.
Now through summer is a perfect time to promote berries. Retailers should take advantage of the power of berries to build up those produce sales. Display your berries in a high traffic location for the duration of the season.
Strawberries: Get them in your ad promotions. Now shipping out of Santa Maria, Salinas and the Watsonville districts of California. Demand is light to good with a steady market. Quality is excellent with good sizing.
Raspberries are shipping from Mexico through Arizona, California and Texas. Demand is light with a steady market.
Blueberry demand is light and the market is steady. Supplies are coming from different areas right now: Mexican product is shipping now but will get lighter; Georgia product is winding down; the New Jersey blueberry deal will be starting in mid-June; and the North Carolina crop will be available soon.
Blackberries: The Mexican crop will transition to California with product coming out of the Oxnard area.
