Kroger's fresh food approach paying off

Earlier this year Kroger Co. said it would grow sales and share by leading with fresh food and increase profitability by accelerating with digital. Those plans are paying off, according to the company's third quarter 2022 results.

Kroger said its go-to-market strategy is delivering value for customers with Our Brands identical sales up 10.4 percent, digital sales up 10 percent and its Fresh Produce Initiative accelerated with a total of 1,252 stores certified, driving higher identical sales — up 6.9 percent excluding fuel.

"Kroger achieved strong results in the third quarter as we continue to execute our Leading with Fresh and Accelerating with Digital strategy," said Chairman and CEO Rodney McMullen. "Our associates are doing an outstanding job delivering a full, fresh and friendly experience across our seamless store and digital ecosystem."

The company's value proposition, which McMullen said "includes providing quality, fresh products at affordable prices, data-driven promotions, trusted Our Brands products and an industry-leading fuel rewards program, is resonating with shoppers and driving increased customer loyalty."

McMullen said the quarter demonstrates the strength of Kroger's approach to growing its business: "By delivering for our customers, investing in our associates and supporting our communities, we are creating attractive and sustainable total returns for our shareholders."
