Harvest Sensations focuses on retail and grower relationships
Keeping business going during difficult times revolves greatly around established relationships, and that is especially true for Harvest Sensations.
“Over the past few years, Harvest Sensations has assembled one of the strongest, most reliable, high-quality network of grower partners of Peruvian asparagus in the industry,” said Tony Pinto, director of sourcing in Miami, FL. “We treat our growers like customers and we’re developing long-term programs with them to meet our customers’ needs.”
Stable production and efficiencies in logistics helped Harvest Sensations offer promotable product to customers despite challenges this year. “Production in both Peruvian regions of Ica and Trujillo is about the same year-over-year,” said Pinto. “More asparagus is arriving by boat, which has stabilized the variable cost of logistics from Peru to Miami. More asparagus arriving by boat has helped to offer more steady pricing for retailers to promote when production is heavy.”
Pinto noted the business is starting to recover from COVID-19. “However, business is still 60-70 percent year-over-year,” he said. “Foodservice has taken a major blow with COVID-19. Retail promotions started at the end of summer/beginning of fall and should continue into winter.”
To further meet customer needs, the company has recently begun to pack all its asparagus bunches with Harvest Sensations branded UPC hangtags.
“This is driven by more business in the retail sector for us,” said Pinto. “For retail, it’s a major benefit, if not a must, to have all your asparagus with UPC hang tags.”
