California LGMA gears up for 2025 with food-safety updates
As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance food-safety practices, the California LGMA regularly updates its protocols and guidelines to reflect the latest scientific research, industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
In August 2024, the California LGMA Advisory approved a series of updates to its food-safety standards, known as metrics, that the company’s members will be required to follow. These changes, effective in 2025, introduce new requirements for agricultural water and the cleaning and sanitation of harvest equipment.
“The updates to agricultural water standards are relatively minor, aligning California LGMA with the most recent FDA guidelines,” said Greg Komar of California LGMA. “However, the more significant changes focus on improving the cleaning and sanitizing of harvest equipment, with additional training, assessments and verification processes. Training on these updates will begin in February 2025, ahead of the Salinas Valley harvest season.”
These updates are designed to ensure growers follow safety measures, from farm to table, helping to prevent contamination and protect public health. By staying proactive in new safety developments, California LGMA supports the industry in maintaining consumer trust and maintain safety of produce in the marketplace.
