Big Y providing meals to those in need this holiday season

Big Y’s annual Sack Hunger campaign provides funds for the four food banks within its two-state marketing area. In turn, these food banks support local soup kitchens, food pantries, senior food programs, day care centers and many others through 2,100-member agencies that it assists every day. The goal is to maximize access to nutritious food and other resources to help ensure food security for those at risk of hunger. These four food banks are The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, Worcester County Food Bank, Greater Boston Food Bank and Connecticut Foodshare.

For a $5 donation, customers can support Sack Hunger from any register at Big Y’s supermarkets, Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors or online here from now through Dec. 11. Every $5 donation brings 10 meals to those in need.

Additionally, Big Y has added even more ways to boost this year’s efforts. It donated a portion of the proceeds from Produce and Floral department purchases from Nov 14- 20. Big Y has pledged a portion of every private label brand that it sell throughout the store from Nov. 29-Dec. 4. These private label brands include Food Club, Crav’n Flavor, Culinary Tours, Full Circle Market, Basket & Bushel, Wide Awake Coffee, Sweet P’s Bake Shop, Cape Covelle Seafood Market, Simply Done, Paws, Pure Harmony, Tippy Toes and Top Care. From Dec. 5-11, Big Y will also donate a portion of the proceeds from the Meat Department.

“Food insecurity continues to be a never-ending challenge in our neighborhoods,” said Michael P. D’Amour, Big Y’s president and CEO. “Big Y’s Sack Hunger program allows us the opportunity to give back and assist the local food banks in spreading joy and support for many people. Together, we can help our communities thrive and make this holiday season brighter for everyone. We are always impressed and appreciative for the generous donations from our customers and employees because of their passion to help people in need within our communities.”

Over the past 13 years, Big Y’s Sack Hunger program has donated millions of meals to those facing various hardships. Each Big Y location contributes to local food banks up to six days a week throughout the year, providing donations of meat, fresh produce, bakery, grocery, frozen foods and dairy products.
