Sunview Marketing seeing strong interest in Sparkle and Stella Bella grapes

Sunview Marketing International is a three-generation family farm located in the San Joaquin Valley of California and is one of the top three shippers in the U.S.

The company’s roots trace back to the early 20th century, and it has since grown into one of the largest table grape producers in the U.S. While Sunview’s primary market is the U.S., it also exports grapes to international markets creating a worldwide demand.

sdf“This year has been off to a good start,” said Mitch Wetzel, vice president of sales and marketing for the Delano, CA-based company. “The whole industry has had to deal with some unusual heat, which has made things move a little bit faster, but I think everyone is off to the races and the whole industry is putting up a good crop of grapes.”

Sunview is particularly known for its diverse range of table grapes, which include varieties such as Flame Scarlett Royal and Autumn King.

“We call these our legacy varieties and these are the foundational grapes and base of everyone’s volume,” Wetzel said. “We certainly need those to hit our critical amount that we need to ship every week.”

The company is also seeing a lot of interest in its proprietary grapes Sparkle and Stella Bella. 

Over the years, the company has invested in research and development to create new grape varieties that offer unique flavors, textures and shelf life, making its proprietary varieties a key differentiator in the market.

“We’re getting a fantastic reception for these proprietary brands,” Wetzel said. “Stella Bella is the green one and Sparkle is the red one; and we’re having an enormous amount of success against the market.”

Other Sunview mid-season grapes that are popular are the company’s Gem, Sweet Bella, Sorella Bella, Sweet Carnival and Carnival Fruit Punch, all of which are available only from the company.

And it continues to experiment to develop new and exciting grape varieties.

“We have a handful of mid- and late-season whites that are in our breeding program that will be unique to us that we will be releasing over the next few years,” Wetzel said. “We also have some more reds that will expand the Sparkle brand line mid-season and late-season reds.”

As one of the largest organic table grape growers and shippers in the country, Sunview will also have a variety of green, red and black organic grapes available through the end of the organic season in December.

The company places a strong emphasis on sustainable farming practices, implementing water conservation techniques, integrated pest management and other environmentally friendly practices to ensure long-term sustainability.

One of the biggest challenges right now is the weather, with a hot June well over the normal average, followed by more extreme temperatures in July and early August.

“That brings challenges, but our industry is very resilient and I think everyone is dealing with it very well,” Wetzel said.

Sunview ships to every region domestically in the U.S. as well as Canada, Mexico and overseas to more than 40 countries.

“Sunview has been in business going on over 70 years, so our message is more about stability, so we keep a very constant and consistent program from early July through early January,” Wetzel said.
