Key news in the Mexican grapes industry

By
Keith Loria

Mexico exports 22.7 million boxes of table grapes annually, while 4.6 million boxes are sold in the national market. Those numbers have been growing exponentially as Mexican grapes have become highly in demand among consumers.

A key advocate for the table grape industry is the Asociación Agrícola Local de Productores de Uva de Mesa (AALPUM), established in 1977 to unite Mexico's leading table grape producers. With a mission to expand the industry and enhance international trade, AALPUM has successfully positioned Mexican table grapes as a premium product in global markets.

AALPUM represents 98 percent of the registered growers in Hermosillo and is responsible for 80 percent of Mexico’s total table grape production. The Sonora region, which includes Hermosillo, Caborca and Guaymas, contributes to 95 percent of the country’s output due to effective coordination and leadership, in partnership with the Local Association of Fruit and Vegetable Producers of Caborca.

Currently, Sonora produces nearly 25 million boxes of grapes, most of which are exported to the United States, Canada, Europe, South America and Asia, while also serving the domestic market.

Being part of AALPUM gives companies access to strategic programs that enhance the production and commercialization of Mexican table grapes as it helps facilitate the importation of new varieties with all necessary permits, provide daily market insights on volumes and prices for better decision-making and secure preferred access to international markets through partnerships with organizations in Mexico, the United States, Chile, Peru and other key countries.

The Mexico Table Grapes Spring Summit 2025 is taking place April 4 in San Diego, bringing together leaders and experts from the table grape industry to discuss the latest news, trends and challenges in the sector.

This exclusive gathering will feature renowned international panelists, importers, growers, distributors, geneticists and authorities from Mexico, the United States, Chile, Peru and other key regions.

Among the speakers this year are Jerry Clode of the Solutions Consultancy; David Magana, senior analyst of horticulture for Rabobank; and Jorge Esteve Recolons, president of Consejo Nacional Agropecuario.

Topics being discussed will include harvest projections, varietal innovations and challenges in the agricultural sector in an environment designed to foster connections and strengthen business relationships.

The table grape industry has experienced some big excitement last month. On March 20, the newly established Global Grape Group announced the launch of its “Have a Grape Day” campaign in the United States.

This campaign is designed to raise awareness of grapes as the ideal healthy snack and aims to engage millions of consumers nationwide through digital media, retail partnerships, out-of-home advertising and point-of-purchase marketing displays.

This initiative is spearheaded by the Global Grape Group, which comprises prominent table grape producers from Chile, Peru and Mexico, with plans to include grape companies from around the globe. The group’s mission is to forge retail alliances and implement consumer marketing strategies that promote grape consumption and reaffirm grapes as the ultimate healthy snack choice.

By leveraging strategic marketing, forming industry partnerships, conducting research and providing consumer education, the Global Grape Group seeks to enhance the perception of grapes in the United States. This approach aims to foster stronger demand, stimulate market growth and ensure long-term sustainability for grape producers around the globe.
