Former Cleveland Growers starts anew as MGI Produce
Marc Glassman Inc., which owns 54 Marc's discount grocery stores in northeastern Ohio and six Xpect discount stores in Connecticut, has purchased the former Cleveland Growers Produce distribution facility in Parma, OH.
MGI Produce anticipates that its new 100,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art refrigerated complex will be operational by the end of the year.
Ed Tousel, former chief operating officer of Cleveland Growers, is now director of produce operations at MGI and will head the procurement and operations team, which will continue to provide the Marc's and Xpect stores with quality produce delivered fresh daily.
Mr. Tousel brings with him over 40 years of produce industry experience. He was formerly director of produce buying and merchandising for Pick-N-Pay Supermarkets before going to work for Cleveland Growers.
During his two decades at Cleveland Growers, Mr. Tousel held various positions including national sales manager, vice president and general manager of operations and chief operating officer until he left the company in February 2005. Upon leaving Cleveland Growers, he went to work as general manager of J. Parker & Sons in Akron, OH.
"We would like to partner with the best growers, shippers and brokers on a journey back to a time when quality produce at a great price was the cornerstone to a strong customer base," Mr. Tousel said in a press release. "We will strive to be a strong voice in the industry, and when you call MGI, you will talk to a person, not a computer-generated prompt. We promise to deliver a hands-on personal approach to each and every grower, shipper and broker, thereby working together as a team to ensure the success of MGI Produce for many years to come."
