Scotlynn plows through winter weather to generate a strong spring crop

How unique was the winter weather in Florida this year?

For the officials at Scotlynn Sweet-Pac Growers, it was so bizarre that some of them wondered if the state was going to lose the rights to ‘The Sunshine State’, the state’s well-known and often-used motto.

display“The winter weather was very unique this year,” said Bryan Biederman, a vice president and owner at the Belle Glade, FL-based grower. “I thought we were going to lose the motto because we did not see the sun for most of December, January and February.”

Yet, as growers do, no one at the company was willing to toss in the towel just because of a little rain and some chilly weather. Biederman said that when the going gets tough, the tough get going, plus things could have been a lot worse.

“Although it was cool and wet, we did not freeze and never flooded,” he said. “We were able to plant for our spring corn volume and the abnormal weather did not hurt us too much.”

And, he added that as the winter came to an end, beautiful weather in late March and early April helped savage the crop for the year.

Now the focus turns to moving products, which includes sweet corn, melon, asparagus and pumpkins, through its retailer partners and generating as much sales and profit as possible. “We have encouraged our retailers to go on ad early and often,” added Biederman. “The crop looks strong and we expect the quality for the mid-April volume to continue to stay excellent.”

Plus, he adds that some nifty marketing moves should help the company and its retailers move product during the next few months. “Our Sweet Pac Traypack is hitting more shelves as the warmer air moves into North America,” Biederman said. “Our eye-catching packaging with the Sweet Pac logo dead center is a sign that spring is here.”

Of course, growing produce is a year-round activity and Biederman said that his company growing activities will move north as the weather improves throughout North America. “Once Florida winds down at the end of May, we move north to Georgia, and then the Carolinas and eventually to the home farm in Ontario – featuring summer favorites sweet corn and watermelon,” he said.

So, what makes Scotlynn special in a tough and competitive environment? Biederman said it is the commitment to its produce and its relationship with its retail partners.“Our focus continues to be on service,” he added. “There are a lot of different produce companies selling the same seasonal vegetables as we move region to region. Scotlynn continues to try and exceed our customer’s expectations when it comes to our service.”

It also means making sure that the company’s retail partners know where they stand in Scotlynn’s overall strategy. “We take tremendous pride in having our products on the retail shelf and we prioritize your loyalty,” Biederman said. “Our business is built on personal relationships that we value above all else.”Biederman added that there is a lot more coming down the road from the company. “In addition to lots of sweet corn, we are looking forward to our Ontario asparagus crop,” he said. “As we open more asparagus acreage in May, we are expecting our biggest crop yet.”
