Mother’s Day floral spending reaches new heights

Mother’s Day is always a massive floral holiday, and with consumer spending trends continuing to reach new heights, it’s also a massive opportunity to maximize sales and profits. Rio Roses provided the key Mother’s Day spending trends and tips to take full advantage of them.

Total Mother’s Day Spending Continued to Grow
Per the National Retail Federation, in 2023, Mother’s Day spending soared to $35.7 billion. That’s a 12.6 percent increase over 2022 and the fifth consecutive year of growth. It was also the second-largest annual increase in over a decade.

Individual Spending Reached Highest-Ever Levels
The per-person spending on Mother’s Day hit $274.02, up nearly 12 percent from 2022 and the highest in the NRF survey’s history. The biggest spenders were 35-44-year-olds, who spent an average of $382.26 on Mother’s Day.

Flowers Topped the List of Gifts
Flowers were the most popular gift, chosen by 74 percent of consumers. Additionally, about 60 percent of respondents planned to take their moms out, showing the growing trend of spending quality time together on Mother’s Day.

Another key point of the survey was that people wanted to spend money on thoughtful gifts. They responded that they wanted to choose unique or different items (47 percent) or those that created a special memory (42 percent).

Shopping Preferences are Evolving
While the majority of consumers shopped online (34 percent) and in department stores (34 percent), they also shopped at specialty stores (30 percent) and local and small businesses (24 percent).

Even more interesting is that 46 percent said they were interested in subscription boxes, up significantly from 39 percent in 2022.

How to Take Advantage of These Trends
Based on these spending trends, here are some simple strategies to maximize your sales and profits this Mother’s Day.

• Target Key Demographics: Tailor your marketing efforts to appeal to the 35-44 age group, who are expected to be the highest spenders this Mother’s Day.
• Diversify Your Offerings: Combine flowers with other items like greeting cards or small gifts to increase your overall sales.
• Offer a Subscription Service: Create a flower subscription that customers can purchase to provide Mom with beautiful blooms every month for the rest of the year.
• Optimize Online Presence: Ensure the company website is user-friendly, online inventory is updated, and take full advantage of social media to promote Mother’s Day offers.

Mother’s Day offers a significant opportunity for floral businesses to grow. By understanding consumer spending habits and preferences and preparing businesses to meet demand, sales can be maximized during this period.
