Why Focus on Hunger Relief?

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, more than 38 million people in the country are food insecure. Over the summer months especially, 22 million children face hunger.

1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Inc. does more than half of its business in food, so helping to fight hunger in America is one of the company’s key philanthropic pillars. In 2021, the company donated nearly $6 million worth of perishable product to local food banks and other organizations around the country that provide direct assistance to families facing hunger. By engaging customers in fundraising campaigns, the company has also provided up to 1.5 million meals to families in need.

Helping Food Banks Through the Collection of Needed Items and Volunteerism

Increasingly, food banks are where many families and individuals are turning to for their next meal. To help make the most impact in fighting food insecurity during Summer of a Million Smiles, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Inc. has teamed up with Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, to match each company location with a local food bank.

Each location is hosting a food collection drive for their matched food bank, collecting shelf-stable items, including peanut butter, dried items such as whole grain pasta and brown rice, and canned items like soup, beans, vegetables, and fruits. Employees are also helping alleviate the workload of food banks in their communities by volunteering to sort and pack food donations.

Human Resources Coordinator Virginia Pagan has been helping to rally food donations on-site in the company’s Jericho, NY headquarters, as well as supporting the various company locations nationwide in their efforts. “Employees have really embraced the challenge, and we are seeing a lot of enthusiasm – and friendly competition – to see which teams can have the biggest impact on their local community.”

So far, company locations have together collected nearly 6,500 food items and employees have donated hundreds of hours of time to support local food banks. More volunteer events are scheduled to take place over the coming weeks.

“The team comradery that the food drive has brought to our Jacksonville, FL, office has been nothing short of amazing! We are having fun, while providing for our community,” says Wendi Thompson, Human Resources Business Partner.
