SunDate, a leading player in the date industry, is riding high on a wave of both growth and opportunity. The company’s sales and operations manager, DJ Ryan, said that near perfect growing conditions this season have helped pave the way for the company to meet the increasing demand for dates, both domestically and globally.

dates“We’ve built an industry that has a 365-day demand for dates,” Ryan said, highlighting the importance of consistency in supply to meet the ever-growing consumer appetite for the fruit. “The one thing you don’t want to happen in the date world is to run out.” This emphasis on continuous supply is not just a short-term priority but is central to long term long-term growth.

Last year’s crop faced significant challenges due to extreme weather events, notably a damaging hurricane that affected production. “This past year, with what we faced with the weather, the hurricane did a lot of damage and as the season went on, a lot of folks began to see that the numbers were off significantly,” Ryan said, contrasting the previous year’s harvest with the current new crop. The company’s ability to rebound from these challenges serves as a testament to their operational resilience.

Currently, the team is optimistic about the upcoming season. “We’re slowly ramping up harvest and packing,” Ryan noted, sharing that they are hopeful shipments of volume can begin by the end of September. SunDate’s steady approach to what they do highlights their dedication to meeting both retail and consumer demand without compromising on quality.

Thanks to ideal growing conditions the 2025 crop is generating significant excitement. “The weather has been perfect, we’ve had one of the hottest summers on record here, which is exactly what dates need,” Ryan said, emphasizing the importance of the region’s climate in producing top-quality dates. Long-range weather forecasts predict predominantly dry conditions, which further support the company’s positive outlook. “We’re now of course looking for predominantly dry weather through October,” he added.

As SunDate looks ahead to a strong harvest, the company is also focused on expanding its market presence. Ryan pointed to the versatility of the Medjool date as a major driver of growth. “Some retailers are seeing over 20 percent growth on dates,” he said. This growth trend is not just confined to the domestic market but extends to international markets as well, where dates are becoming more widely recognized as a healthy, natural pantry staple.

The company has seen consistent growth over the past two decades, with Ryan noting, “For us, it’s back to a normal year. We’ve had double-digit growth every year for the last 20, and we’re looking forward to a year with good supply.” This track record of success positions SunDate to continue capitalizing on growing consumer interest, particularly among health-conscious buyers.

Organic growth is another area where the company is leading the charge. “Organic is a big part of what we do,” Ryan said, pointing out that the company has steadily increased its organic production as new date gardens come online and older gardens transitioning to organic practices. “I believe we’re the largest organic date grower in the industry,” he added, underscoring SunDate’s commitment to sustainable farming and meeting the demand for organic products.

In addition to organic production, SunDate has been expanding its packaging options to cater to changing consumer preferences. “We’re growing in both domestic and export markets and seeing more people moving toward bags at retail,” Ryan said. The shift toward bagged dates aligns with broader trends in convenience and sustainability, which are reshaping the retail landscape.

The company’s focus on innovation extends beyond packaging to in-store promotions as well. “We’re expanding our offerings in bags and clamshells and doing more displays and tools for promotion,” Ryan said. This emphasis on visibility has proven successful, as retailers utilizing floor displays have been rewarded with increased sales. SunDate continues to promote these strategies, helping retail partners maximize their returns.

Another area of notable growth is the pitted date category. “The growth of the pitted category has been significant,” Ryan said, highlighting the increasing demand for convenience among consumers. The company plans to expand its offerings in this category as well, ensuring they stay ahead of market trends.

One of SunDate’s key advantages is its vertical integration, which allows the company to maintain control over the entire supply chain. “The vast majority of our fruit, virtually all of it is ours, so we can control everything,” Ryan said, emphasizing the benefits of not relying on external growers. This control translates to superior quality and consistency, which are critical in maintaining the trust of consumers and retailers alike.

With ideal weather conditions, expanding market opportunities, and a commitment to quality and sustainability, SunDate is well-positioned to lead the charge in an increasingly health-conscious world.
