Dan Graiff Farms is upgrading and expanding the family firm

NEWFIELD, NJ — Dan Graiff Farms, growers, processors and shippers located here near Vineland, is in the process of upgrading and expanding different aspects of the business.

The company is upgrading its website to include recipe pages, which will make it more interesting and valuable to consumers, according to brothers Dan and Jamie Graiff, co-owners of the family firm. The two men hope to have the upgrades to the website completed “by around PMA time,” they told The Produce News Aug. 18.

NJfall2619Dan Graiff (seated) and his brother, Jamie Graiff, represent the fourth generation in their family’s produce history. In addition, the company, which has 250 acres — 22 in Vineland, 130 on the farm in Newfield, and the balance in the Vineland area — is planning to increase that acreage by leasing about 100 acres (which had previously been a nursery) “to help rotate our existing crops,” they said.

The facility here in Newfield is about 30,000 square feet, primarily cold storage, processing and storage areas, the brothers noted. In addition to the 250 acres of farmland here, the company draws on another 750 acres in three areas (Belle Glade, FL; Yuma, AZ; and Salinas, CA) to give it year-round supplies.

“Everything that’s grown is packed for retail and foodservice distribution,” they said. Consumers can find the company’s products in the refrigerated cases of a supermarket’s produce department.

The family traces its agricultural roots back four generations in the south Jersey area, the brothers said. Dan Graiff Farms was founded in 1980 by the brothers’ parents; their father died in 1994, but their mother, Doris, “still comes into the office a couple of days per week,” they noted.

When the company began in 1980, “we grew on 16 acres,” they recalled. “This facility in Newfield was purchased in 1999.” There are also two acres of high tunnels here that are used for items such as round tomatoes and Zucchini squash blossoms.

Dan, 52, manages the growing and production sides of the business, while Jamie, 46, is in sales and promotions. Dan’s son Scott is in harvesting and production as well as the firm’s food safety program.

Omar Martinez, who has been with the company for around four years, is the operations manager, overseeing all processing areas.

Robin Hackney joined the company in August 2014 as office manager.

The company is a year-round grower of baby spinach, arugula, red onions, white, onions, Pearl onions, shallots, Italian cipollini onions, spring mix and baby kale, all shipped under the “Five Star Premium Greens & Herbs” label.

The company ships as far north as Canada, as far south as Florida and as far west as the Chicago-Detroit area.
