California Giant pledges $30,000 to fight cancer

Watsonville, CA-based California Giant owners and staff are preparing to walk and run around the clock in the battle against cancer for the fifth consecutive year during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life this summer in Watsonville. This 24-hour "celebration of life" brings numerous groups and individuals concerned about cancer together for a unified effort to fight back.

The California Giant Berry Farms team, comprised of staff, owners and families, will gather at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds for an overnight relay against cancer from 10 a.m. Aug. 9 until 10 a.m. Aug. 10. However, before they arrive for the event, much work is done to raise funds for the annual event. The staff uses creativity in organizing community fundraisers to meet the goal of raising $20,000 prior to the Aug. 9 event.

In addition, the company serves as the presenting sponsor with an additional $10,000 donation each year to the event, providing a lump sump of $30,000. To date, the staff has already raised half of the money needed leading into the big barbecue planned at the company's corporate offices for July 15. Each year, the Skirt Steak BBQ generates over $5,000 in profits toward the team goal.

Each staff member on the California Giant team, which is called Hope in a Giant Way, is fundraising for the cause, and the community is extremely supportive. As plans get underway for the 2008 event, the staff and owner team meets on a regular basis to design games, events and fundraising ideas for the 24-hour event to stay awake and motivated to keep moving around the track.

Relay For Life is a unique fundraising event that allows participants from all walks of life - including cancer survivors, patients and their families, medical support staff, corporations, civic organizations, places of worship, and community groups - to join together to fight cancer. The goal of Relay For Life is to remind people that progress has been made in the fight against cancer and that everyone who participates is making a difference.

Relay For Life is as much an awareness-raiser about the progress against cancer as it is a fundraiser. "California Giant has been committed to fundraising for the American Cancer Society since the company was formed over 35 years ago. Almost everyone you meet today has been touched by cancer either directly or with family or friends. We at Cal Giant believe strongly in the work being done by the American Cancer Society and support their efforts every year," Bill Moncovich, president of Cal Giant, said in a press release.

California Giant encourages other members within the produce industry to get involved in a charitable organization like this. "We are so proud of the efforts made by our staff to support the Relay for Life with such enthusiasm. Not only are we raising funds for a worthy cause, but we are creating such positive energy in the workplace here at Cal Giant," Mr. Moncovich added in the release.
