Big Y giving big money to local farmers

Big Y and the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation remind farmers in western Massachusetts that the application deadline for a Local Farmer Award is Jan. 31. These awards for equipment and physical farm improvements support local farmers with projects that improve their ability to compete in the marketplace.bigy

Recipients will be awarded up to $2,500, and the partners anticipate distributing over $116,000 in 2018. Realizing the economic importance of local farms in our region, the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation launched the program in 2015. In 2017, more than 49 of the applicants received awards.

“Through our partnership with the Grinspoon Foundation, we are providing one more way to help local growers thrive in our community,” said Big Y President and Chief Operations Officer Charlie D’Amour.

The value of the awards program is affirmed by recipients. “Thank you so much for supporting our work in making healthy, local food accessible to all," said 2017 recipient Just Roots Farm in Greenfield. "We are so excited to get our Perfecta and boost productivity in the field. More food for more people.”

The deadline for applying is Jan. 31. For more information visit www.farmerawards.org
