Culinary diplomacy on display at AFP’s Fleet Week superfood breakfast

NEW YORK — Avocados from Peru engaged in a bit of culinary diplomacy May 23 during New York City’s 36th annual Fleet Week, serving an avocado-inspired superfood breakfast to the brave men and women who serve in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marines aboard the USS New York.

The event was hosted by Captain Justin T. Issler, commanding officer of the USS New York, while AFP President and CEO Xavier Equihua led his organization’s delegation, reaffirming the cultural and economic ties between Peru and the United States.

Equihua said it was both an “honor and a responsibility” for AFP to serve the U.S. Navy on Memorial Day weekend, a time when the nation remembers the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.

He added that it was even more meaningful to be aboard the USS New York, which contains more than seven tons of steel from the ruins of the World Trade Center and is named in honor of the city’s resilience following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Chefs Giuseppe and Mario Lanzone of the acclaimed Peruvian Brothers restaurants and food trucks were also on hand as part of the Avocados from Peru delegation, creating superfood smoothies that featured Hass avocados from Peru, blueberries and other nutritious ingredients.

Other distinguished attendees included Rear Adm. David J. Patchell, vice commander of the U.S. 2nd Fleet and senior officer in the Royal Canadian Navy; and Rear Adm. Will E. Watson, director of governmental and public affairs for the U.S. Coast Guard — reinforcing the cross-branch and allied collaboration that defines Fleet Week.

While AFP has sponsored similar Fleet Week events in previous years, Equihua said this year was notable for a couple of reasons.

“First, it was truly a bi-national event that featured Avocados from Peru in a breakfast to honor U.S. service members,” he said. “On a deeper level, we are a non-profit organization that represents Peruvian avocados and operates under a federal marketing order, and that showcases the bi-national partnership between Peru and the United States.”

The other memorable takeaway for Equihua was the intimacy of this year’s event.

“The USS New York is an amphibious attack ship and is smaller than in previous years when the breakfast was held aboard an aircraft carrier,” he said. “Thus, it had a more intimate feel, and we had a chance to have some real conversations with the officers and the servicemembers alike. They were all so appreciative of the delicious and healthy breakfast we prepared. In fact, we had a hard time keeping up with the demand for the avocado smoothies!”

The Fleet Week event follows a successful official launch of AFP’s 2025 U.S. season at the Guac Off Challenge at Sea World San Diego and precedes the brand’s traditional annual avocado donations to multiple food banks across the U.S. – furthering its mission to support hunger relief efforts with nutrition and expand access to fresh, heart-healthy foods.

Equihua said Peru is expected to export more than 200 million pounds during the AFP 2025 season, which runs from May through September.
