Avocados, the real MVP this football season

sdfFootball season is here, and it’s shaping up to be a winning year for fans and avocados. As football fans pull out their team jerseys, stock the coolers and fire up grills, one thing’s for sure: avocados are scoring big across the nation this season.

The Super Bowl continues to be the biggest avo-ccasion of the year; in 2024, shoppers purchased 62.3 million units of avocados, generating over $59.4 million in sales. A solid 45 percent of avocado shoppers are NFL fans, and 17 percent cheer on their favorite college teams. This means that nearly half of avocado lovers are in football mode and gearing up for all things gameday — and they’re taking avocados along for the kickoff.

The 2024-25 football season opener came with some exciting stats: 54 million avocados were sold in just one weekend, a 2 percent increase over last year. And with this boost, sales spiked to $70.5 million, an impressive 22 percent increase from the same time last season.

One out of every three football fans lists guacamole as their top gameday snack. Football fans over-index on guacamole ingredients like tomatoes (up 2.8 times), onions (up 2.1 times), and, of course, tortilla chips (up 1.8 times). Together, they’re the perfect lineup for the ultimate guacamole setup.

For Mission's partners in retail, wholesale and foodservice, now’s the perfect time to create winning displays, promotions and purchase bundles for all things avocado. When avocados are on the list, basket sizes jump by an average of $41 during college football playoff season.

Mission Produce is partnered with Avocados From Mexico to make avo promos an easy win this season with campaigns geared up for both college and professional football.

As football season heats up, avocados are proving to be the real MVP of gameday gatherings. Now is the time to build your playbook with a winning merchandising strategy and lots of delicious avocados!
