Rice Fruit kicks off 2024 apple harvest bringing flavor to the forefront

Looking forward to its 112th season, Rice will begin its apple harvest in just a few short weeks.

apples“Our bloom was slightly earlier than last year, but over the last couple of months, the timing has leveled out, and we’re on track to begin harvest at the same time as last year,” said Brenda Briggs, vice president of sales and marketing. “As we make it down the home stretch, we’re hoping for gentle rain and some cooler nights to increase sizing and encourage color development. Galas, Ginger Golds and Honeycrisp will be our first picks, and we’re excited to begin our programs.”

With a robust apple harvest on the horizon and an increase in unique and trending apples such as Lemonade, SnapDragon, and Evercrisp, Rice Fruit is already thinking ahead to how retailers can create buzz around apples, their flavor profiles and unique culinary uses this season.

With plenty of new and traditional apple varieties on the market, retailers should aim to display five to seven varieties to meet consumer preferences for diversity in flavor, trends and cooking. Displaying regional or local varieties is also important to give customers apples that reflect the region’s characteristics. Providing point-of-sale information on flavor profiles can also help provide customers with information on new and exciting apple varieties.

New varieties can stand out in packaged products as a way to attract consumers seeking novelty and different selections. Staple apple varieties still perform best in bulk displays.

“While change is inevitable, tradition is forever,” said Briggs. “Consumer preferences may shift, which is why we offer a selection of premium apple varieties, but the pleasure and benefits of eating an apple remain unchanged. We aim to create a memorable eating experience that not only attracts new apple consumers, but also reminds them that apples are convenient, nutritious and economical when it comes to eating fresh produce.”

Retailers can also boost apple sales while elevating the shopping experience through curated displays that inspire consumers to incorporate apples into their meals for salads or desserts, positioning additional key ingredients close to their apple displays while highlighting a featured recipe idea.

Positioning complementary pairings with apples, such as cheeses, nuts, artisanal breads or local wines, can help consumers integrate apples into their meals effortlessly.
