'Super' Vidalia awards banquet

vide

VIDALIA, GA — It was fitting that Super Bowl XXVI champion and hometown hero Fred Stokes was the featured speaker at the annual Vidalia onion awards banquet held here Feb. 6 at the Hawks Point Country Club.

The annual event serves as the industry's own Super Bowl. It's an evening of dining and dancing and a celebration of the region's unique industry.

The theme of the evening was "Team Vidalia" and Stokes and Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black brought messages of teamwork and unity to the Vidalia growers, shippers and affiliated industry supporters who packed the banquet hall to honor their own.

J. Scott Angle, former dean of the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences was inducted into the Vidalia Hall of Fame for his contributions to the industry through research.

Outgoing Vidalia Onion Committee Chairman Jason Herndon, partner with his uncle Bo Herndon in L.G. Herndon Jr. Farms of Lyons, GA was named by his peers as Grower of the Year.
