Two Pre-Mother’s Day Sales Events: National Teachers’ Day and National Nurses’ Day

Teachers and nurses are humble heroes who invest in other people — this month we observe their many contributions.

nurses1 National Nurses Day is Monday, May 6

Nurses are considered to be one of the most trusted professionals in any field. They are the real foundation of every hospital and medical facility. They successfully blend skillful medical competence and compassion into one. They advocate for us and chat with us as friends. They tell us the facts, while also holding our hand. They comfort us during some of the most emotional times of our lives — they exemplify compassion and sensitivity.

The history of Nurses Day can be traced back to a proposal Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare made to President Eisenhower. Twenty years later in January 1974, the International Council of Nurses announced that May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday, would be “International Nurse Day’’ and in that same year President Richard Nixon issued a proclamation for “National Nurse Week.’’ National Nurses Day became a federally recognized holiday in 1982 thanks to a proclamation by President Ronald Reagan. In 1993, the ANA designated May 6–12 as permanent dates to observe “National Nurses Week” to celebrate and elevate the nursing profession.

National Teachers Day is Tuesday, May 7 teacher1

Why give special recognition to teachers? Because they are more than educators - they are mentors, cheerleaders, coaches, leaders, and sometimes counselors. They inspire, motivate, and encourage. Almost everyone can instantly call to mind an influential teacher who played a role in their life and made a subject enjoyable. We may have forgotten the lessons, but we’ll always remember that teacher.

The National Education Association describes National Teacher Day “as a day for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives.”

In 1953, people in the United States started celebrating National Teacher’s Day after Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded Congress to set aside a day to recognize educators. It did not become a national day until March 7, 1980. The National Education Association continued to observe Teacher’s Day on the first Tuesday in March until 1985 when the National Parent Teacher Association established Teacher Appreciation Week as the first full week of May. The National Education Association (NEA) then voted to make the Tuesday of that week National Teacher Day.

Teachers and Nurses play a critical role in educating – they are kind, patient, nurturing, and dedicated professionals. Together you can help your customers’ express gratitude and thanks.
