Research carried out by the Hochschule Geisenheim University in collaboration with Chrysal International, shows that the condition of plants in a supermarket influences the buying intention, and the potential amount of sales, of products in other categories within the store, according to a news release. The research showed a correlation between the freshness of potted plants and the sales of fruits, vegetables, breads and dairy products. Plus, customers are far more likely to recommend a store with fresh plants versus unhealthy-looking stock.
A total of 400 people in the research study were asked about their shopping behavior in supermarkets. Individuals were randomly shown either a picture of a display with fresh plants or one with withered plants. At least 8 percent more customers wanted to buy fruits and vegetables if the plants in the store were fresh. The intention to buy plants was 40 percent higher when the potted plants were fresh and 15 percent more customers said they would recommend the supermarket that had a display of healthy, fresh-looking plants.
The research also showed that the purchase intention of plants and flowers significantly decreased by 34 percent when the potted plants were not taken care of for two days. And for longer than two days, the purchase intention decreased even further.
