Demand continues to increase for mushroom-blended products

Giorgio Fresh Co., headquartered in Blanton, PA, is a major supporter of the Mushroom Council’s initiatives, and has been since the council’s inception.

Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Brian Threlfall, said, “Giorgio values the opportunity to collaborate with the Mushroom Council throughout the year and especially during National Mushroom Month.”

He added that there continues to be increasing demand for blended products in both the retail and foodservice markets.

“Just in the past few months we’ve seen some significant additions of blended products in the food service sector,” said Threlfall. “As consumers continue to become increasingly more health-conscious, the trend-to-blend continues to become more appealing.

GiorgioOrganicGiorgio’s fresh organic mushrooms.“In regard to school systems, Giorgio has worked with many meat processors to help develop blended products,” he continued. “These blended products provide K-12 students, college and university students, as well as other market segments, with increased nutrition with healthier menu choices.”

Threlfall explained that organics are definitely leading the growth in the mushroom category. Giorgio Fresh continues to meet consumers’ growing demand for organic mushrooms by offering a complete organic fresh mushroom line that includes whole and sliced white, whole and sliced Baby Bella, Portabella caps and sliced caps, whole and sliced Shiitake, Royal Trumpet, Maitake and Beech varieties.

In early July, Giorgio Fresh shared some exciting internal news when it   announced the hiring of Joe Caldwell who will assume the role of president once Dave Carroll, current president of Giorgi Mushroom Co. and Giorgio Fresh Co., transitions toward retirement over the next nine months.

During the transition, Caldwell and Carroll will run the operation as a team. After that time, Carroll will remain with the organization in an advisory, technical and strategic role.

“Joe has been a leader in the industry for over 30 years, most recently as vice president of Monterey Mushroom,” Carroll said in a press release. “He is well known throughout our industry as someone who is excited and passionate about mushrooms and the mushroom business. His leadership skills, integrity and business acumen will fit well into the Giorgio organization. His vision of a bright future for our industry will build upon our successes and help continue the growth of our company well into the future.”

“Giorgio is an outstanding company made up of amazing employees, and I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead,” Caldwell said in the release. “Over the last 30 years, Dave has led the transformation of this organization to be a leader in the mushroom industry and a company that he can be very proud of.”

“Giorgio’s best days are ahead and I am excited about the company’s future,” Carroll added. “I am very happy that I will be leaving Giorgio in what I feel are the best hands possible.”
