Northampton staying ahead with technology with eye on community support

Operating a produce firm with the latest technology is key to a healthy business. But maintaining dedication to community speaks to not allowing technology to interfere with human compassion.

Northampton Growers Produce Sales Inc., headquartered in Cheriton, VA, has managed to balance its technological advances with the culture and heritage the company was founded on more than five decades ago.ccsm3aNorthampton partners Steve McCready, comptroller, and Calvert Cullen, president.

A leading grower, packer and shipper of a wide variety of vegetables, the company recently launched a new website that better suits its business needs and matches its progressive thinking.

At the same time, it remains steadfast in its community support.

“The website was in need of a redesign,” said Heather Acros, assistant controller. “Our goal was to design a site that is more user-friendly and eye-catching for existing and potential customers to navigate. But we also wanted a site that would enable our highly experienced sales’ team to better market our products.”

Acros explained that the new site provides ongoing updated text and photos. A news page offers information on products, company updates and does a better overall job of keeping visitors informed.

“The site also enables direct email links to all of our salespeople, making it simple for customers to be in touch,” she added.

Customer response to the new site has been positive.

“They like the new look and the news page,” said Acros. “And they tell us that navigating the new site is very easy. We have garnered some new customers that we attribute to the new site.”

Technological advances or not, Northampton Growers remains a strong supporter of its local community. It annually supports a District 8, Virginia, Little League team.

“This year we sponsored a team called the Giants, comprised of 11- and 12-year-olds,” said Acros. “We’re proud to announce that they ended their season in second place.”

She noted that the company has sponsored teams for several years.

“As the sponsor, Northampton Growers provides uniforms and equipment, and many of our staff members have volunteered time to help grow the community sports programs that are offered to kids on the Eastern Shore,” she said. “We want to give back to our community, and what could be a better way?”
